Family Medicine Physician
Avril Swan, MD
Dr. Avril Swan integrates traditional western medicine with alternative methods when treating her patients. As a family physician, she sees patients of all ages with a range of needs, including preventative care as well as urgent and chronic concerns.

High-Touch Primary Care & Chronic Disease Management
Since 2000, Dr. Avril Swan has practiced medicine in San Francisco, focusing on time, clarity, and evidence-based care. By intentionally limiting the size of her practice, Dr. Swan is able to offer a level of accessibility and personal attention that is increasingly rare in today’s healthcare system. This concierge approach ensures she has the time to listen, the availability to respond, and the bandwidth to manage the "whole picture" for every patient.
Care for Individuals & Families

As a Family Physician, Dr. Swan is trained to care for the entire family unit as well as individuals navigating their health solo. There is a distinct advantage to having a physician who understands the shared genetics and lifestyle of a household, yet she is equally dedicated to being the primary support and medical anchor for individuals. Whether she is treating multiple generations or a single patient, her approach is rooted in a deep understanding of each person's unique history and health goals.

Systemic Wellness: Navigating autoimmune conditions and the nuances of hormonal changes.
Children & Young Adults: Dr. Swan welcomes new children to her practice ages five and up and loves helping teenagers and young adults navigate the transition to adult medicine—a critical time for establishing lifelong health habits.
Your Advocate & Partner in Care
The healthcare system is increasingly difficult to navigate, and Dr. Swan believes no one should do it alone. She views her role as a partnership with her patients, acting as a central hub for your medical care. This is a team effort; she works closely with you to align clinical goals with your personal values.
When specialized care is needed, she uses her twenty-plus years in the San Francisco medical community to help you find the right specialists—from surgeons to physical therapists. By coordinating directly with these providers, she ensures your care is streamlined, cohesive, and that you always have a direct line to a physician who truly knows you.
An Educator’s Approach
Education is at the heart of Dr. Swan’s work. A graduate of Mayo Medical School, she completed her residency in Family Medicine at UCSF, followed by a Fellowship in Medical Education. Today, she continues her involvement in academia as an Associate Volunteer Clinical Professor at UCSF.
This background defines her clinical style. Rather than just giving instructions, she ensures you understand the "why" behind your health. By translating complex clinical data into clear information, she helps her patients make practical, confident decisions about their own care.
Deeply Rooted in San Francisco
A long-time San Franciscan, Dr. Swan moved to the city at age seven and attended Lowell High School before heading to UC Berkeley for her undergraduate degree. After completing medical school in Rochester, Minnesota, she returned home to raise her three children alongside her husband, Stuart, a retired SFUSD teacher. Deeply invested in the local community, she believes that straightforward communication and a collaborative spirit are the foundations of good medicine.
